It is a selective and differential medium used for the isolation and enumeration of Staphylococcus aureus in food, water, and clinical samples. The medium contains specific components that inhibit the growth of Gram-negative bacteria and most Gram-positive bacteria other than staphylococci, allowing for the selective growth of Staphylococcus aureus.
